Athens defense leads the way to another big win
By Michael V. Hannigan
JACKSONVILLE -- It was deja vu all over again for Athens.
For the second straight week, the Athens Hornets rolled up a 21-point lead on their way to a blowout win over a familiar opponent.
For the second straight week, the Hornets were helped in the first half by interceptions from AJ White and Dewayne Minifee.
And for the fourth straight week, the Hornets scored more than 30 as they knocked off the Jacksonville Indians Friday night, 31-0.
The win improved the Hornets' record to 3-1 while Jacksonville fell to 1-3.
The defense was the star of this one, outscoring Jacksonville on its own, 7-0, thanks to a pick 6 by AJ White on one of his two interceptions.
The Athens defense held Jacksonville to 161 total yards on the night, but more than half of those yards came in the fourth quarter when the game was essentially over.
"Any time you pitch a shutout, obviously you played really good defense," said Coach Zac Harrell. "I can't give enough credit to Coach Rives and the defense. That's two weeks in a row playing at an extremely high level."
While the offense wasn't as explosive as it has been at times this season, it still put up 24 points while dealing with injuries and shuffling alignments along the line.
"For us to still win with the adversity we went through during the week, I thought it speaks to the potential of this team," said Coach Harrell.
Once again, Athens protected its key players in the second half while playing with a big lead.
David Richardson went 16 of 26 for 175 yards and two touchdowns passing.
Julious Brewer had eight catches for 89 yard and E'manuel Moore added five for 55 yards.
NO FLAGS
The Hornets did not get called for a single penalty Friday night. Not one flag was thrown against Athens.
"That speaks to the cleanliness of the game our kids played, not making any mental errors," said Coach Harrell. "Early in the season we had a lot of self-inflicted wounds and we challenged them to fix that and I thought they did a good job."
NEXT WEEK
The Hornets travel to Waco next week to take on the 3-1 Connally Cadets. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
