The Athens Hornets' first scrimmage is in the books, offering up the blend of highlights and teachable moments typical of this point in the season.
Athens traveled to Fairfield Friday night to face the Eagles, getting their first taste of action against a different color jersey this season. The Hornet first team started off a bit sluggish on both sides of the ball, with the defense giving up some big plays early on. However, when given a second chance, the starters on both offense and defense stepped up and outplayed the Eagles.
On the night, quarterback David Richardson completed 10-of-12 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Remember, this was a scrimmage and the ball was moved around quite a bit, so the yardage total is an estimate.
Receiver Julious Brewer was the big target, piling up over 100 yards receiving and both touchdowns. The video is Richardson hitting Brewer for a 15 yard score.
Coach Zac Harrell praised the work of the offensive line, which did a good job protecting Richardson and opening up holes in the running game, particularly for Jabory Taylor who ran very hard.
Defensively, the Hornets were tough against the run and improved in coverage throughout the session. Cornerback AJ White had a particularly strong showing in coverage during the first team's second time on the field.
The Athens defense also recorded the only takeaway, a fumble recovery late in the scrimmage.
The Hornets' next scrimmage is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 22, against Lindale at Bruce Field.
